Ayuba Ibrahim Zoakah

Professor Ayuba Ibrahim Zoakah was born in Jos, on the 15th of December 1961. He completed his elementary school at Baptist Primary School, Jos in 1974; secondary school at ECWA Secondary School Miango in 1979; A levels at ABU Zaria School of Basic Studies 1980; and University education at ABU Zaria in 1986, where he obtained his MBBS degree in Medicine and Surgery.  In addition, he had a Postgraduate Diploma in Management and Master of Business Administration from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi in 1999 and 2001 respectively. He also obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in HIV Medicine from Galilee International Management Institute in Israel in 2009. He has over 10 postgraduate certificates in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from various European and American Universities.

He did his National Youth Service in Rivers State from 1987 – 1988; after which he started his working career as a Medical Officer at Evangel Hospital Jos (Now Bingham University Teaching Hospital), from 1988 – 1989. In 1990, he moved to Jos University Teaching Hospital to start his Residency training in Community Medicine. He was employed as Lecturer II in the Department of Community Medicine in 1994. He completed this residency training in 1995 and was employed as Consultant Public Health Physician by Jos University Teaching Hospital. He held many positions in both institutions, which included Head of Department of Community Medicine from 1995 – 2003, and then 2010 – 2014. He was also the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee of Jos University Teaching Hospital from 1999 – 2003. In addition to these he was the Director of Community Medicine of the Institute of Human Virology, FCT Abuja Nigeria from 2008 – 2010.

He started his teaching career in the Department of Community Medicine, Faculty of Medical Sciences in 1994 as Lecturer II. He rose to the pinnacle of his career as Professor Community Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology in 2005. He served as a member of many boards in Nigeria, including the Jos University Teaching Hospital Board, Community Health Practitioners Registration Board, and Bingham University Teaching hospital, Jos, where he was the Board Chairman from 2012 – 2014. He served as National President of Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN) and Epidemiological Society of Nigeria (EPISON).  

Professor Ayuba Ibrahim Zoakah has distinguished himself as a teacher, researcher, mentor, administrator, and scholar in Medicine. He has published over two hundred (200) scientific research papers and has contributed to many medical books and technical reports in the health sector. He has been a Consultant to many agencies and organizations in the health sector both local and International. He had also trained over sixty (60) Consultant Public Health Physicians, who currently occupy many leadership positions in Nigeria and abroad. Professor Ayuba Ibrahim Zoakah is a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians and Royal Society of Public Health UK. He is married and has three children. He is currently a Professor of Community Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology at the College of Health Sciences, University of Jos, and Consultant Public Health Physician at Jos University Teaching Hospital. His research interests are in Clinical Epidemiology, Disease Modelling, and Health Systems. He is married and blessed with three children. His hobbies are watching football, tennis and golf. He plays table tennis and badminton.
